The reason Hüsker Dü lasted a decade and Guided by Voices is up to four is because you can’t bang heads together if there’s only one. So Bob Mould had a couple false starts in Hüsker Dü and Sugar before achieving his dream paradox of a power trio named after himself, and Robert Pollard’s shed lineups of Guided by Voices like Mark E. Smith before him, the unchanging legacies of men possessed to keep churning ‘em out. At 64 and 67 respectively, these men are the alt-rock lifer defined, with the undying fanbases to prove it. And no matter how consistently their sales solidified, both earned their cults from music they pounded out 30 and 40 years ago.
